Summer and the sunshine are around the corner, what’s your favorite summer activity/event?
Every summer I make a list of all the family friendly events I think my family would enjoy. Having a list down makes it easy to plan your calendar, or if you’re trying to come up with something fun to do, it’s a nice reference.

»Wednesdays starting July 19-August 30 Music on the Square – The Village at Chambers Bay. Make plans to have “dinner out” on Market Square on specific Wednesday evenings this summer as Music on the Square takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. Enjoy a different band each week, accompanied by a different food truck vendor as well!
»July 22, 2023 Bark by the Bay – Chambers Bay, Central Meadows – 10am-4pm Chambers Creek Regional Park is excited to bring back Bark by The Bay, a summer fun canine festival! This one-day festival is full of dog activities and games, an art project, treat hunting, vendors, and food trucks.
»August 1, 2023 National Night Out – Register Your Group/Neighborhood by July 28
»August 5, 2023 Movie in the Park – The movie begins at dusk in Cirque Park, located at 7250 Cirque Drive West in University Place. Make plans to pack up the kids, a blanket or chairs and get ready for a memorable evening of free family fun courtesy of the City of University Place! Movie still being determined.
»August 5-6, 2023 Kite Festival – 10am-4pm. The entire family will be captivated by amazing kite demonstrations, family kite flying, inflatables, food trucks, vendors, and other fun activities! Each day 250 kites will be given away, compliments of the Pierce County Kitefliers Association!
»August 19-20, 2023 Family Campout – Chambers Creek Park *Registration required
»August 26, 2023 Ariel & Moana’s End of Summer Party – Summer’s coming to a close – but the fun is just starting! Join Moana and our NEW Live-Action Ariel for their End of Summer Party on Saturday, August 26th. Games, dancing, singing, face painting, and more- this party is truly the bubbles! »June 23, 2023 Summer Jump Off Community BBQ – at Eastside Community Center from 3:00pm-6:00pm. Admissions is free to the public! There will be a DJ, ice cream, barbeque, a bouncy house and carnival games with prizes!
»June 26-Sept 1, 2023 Summer Late Nights – Monday-Friday, 5-10 pm at various locations. Starting June 26, Summer Teen Late Nights opens across Tacoma, with schools, community centers and non-profits opening their doors to keep teens safe and engaged. Tacoma Public Schools middle and high schoolers can get dinner every night and participate in open gym, art and music activities, and hang out with friends. FREE
»June 30, July 28, August 25, 2023 Lincoln District Food Walk – 4pm-9pm We’re closing down the heart of Lincoln District and filling the district with food trucks, music, performers and a michelada/beer garden, and a pop-up marketplace for shopping.
»Summer Playground & Meal Program – Monday- Friday, July 3-Sept 1, 2023
When school’s out, parks are in! Our Playground and Lunch Program provides free lunch to all youth under 18 years of age Monday-Friday. In addition, activities and games are led by staff at all sites from 10 am-3 pm. Lunch is served from 12 to 1 pm.
»July 4th, 2023 Tacoma Summer Blast – This annual event takes place on Dune Peninsula and the iconic Ruston Way Waterfront and features two distinct event footprints, over 150 vendors, 2 stages and a 20-minute firework display. This event is the largest free community event in the South Sound. 11am-10:30pm
»July 7-23, 2023 Vernados Circus – is coming to the Star Center in Tacoma! This is a must not miss for our family, we’ve been going for the past couple years and it never gets old. It’s under a big tent like the circus used to be many many years ago. Get tickets here.
»July 14, 2023 Family Fun Night at Fort Nisqually – Bring a picnic dinner and settle in for 19th century games, music, and the firing of the candy cannon! 6:00pm-9:00pm, tickets range from $0-11
»July 15, 2023 Shakespeare In The Park- 7-9pm Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and snacks to Wright Park for this production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Free!
»July 29-30, 2023 Mosaic Tacoma Arts & Cultural Festival – Wright Park 12pm-7pm. This family‐friendly, free festival has grown in size and hosts Kid’s Zones, hands‐on cultural activities, and experiences, performer stage, as well as numerous specialty arts and crafts, food and information vendor booths.
»LeMay Motors & Movies – Grab dinner at our picnic concessions and watch in your car or from a blanket, either option will provide you a great view of the 40-foot tall outdoor screen. Motors & Movies is FREE and open to all ages, no RSVP required, first come first served. Gates for parking 6:30 pm, Movie Start Time: Sunset

»Summer Bash & Outdoor Movie – Pack your snacks, blankets and lawn chairs and head to the park for a free outdoor movie for the whole family. Seating is on the lawn, so attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or folding chairs.

»August 12-13, 2023 Brigade Encampment – 11am-5pm, Step back in time to 1855 at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum’s 40th annual Brigade Encampment. This event recreates the bustle and excitement of the historic visit of fur traders to Fort Nisqually in 1855. Guests will witness the arrival of the brigade (the convoy that delivered a year’s worth of furs) and spirited contests between trappers and traders. Visitors can participate in “Engagé for the Day,” visiting with living historians at their tents and receiving hands-on lessons on period skills, food sampling, live music, Punch and Judy Puppet Shows by Professor Pettitcoat, and a performance by the Pacific Ohana Foundation honoring the contributions and history of Hawaiians in Pacific Northwest history. Admission ranges from 0-$18, register online
»August 12-13, 2023 FREE South Tacoma Heritage Festival – Asia Pacific Cultural Center. The festival will have a diverse range of activities, including dance, music, science, cultural presentations, kids’ activities, retail and food booths, cultural and martial art demonstrations, and much more. APCC will ensure that the festival remains true to the community’s spirit and aspirations, creating an event that resonates with attendees of all ages and backgrounds.
»August 26, 2023 Bite of Black Business – Wright Park, 11am-6pm. Each event may include different panels , workshops from local organizations, seminars , special performances from local artists , guest speakers, kid activities , bounce houses , raffles and prizes.
»August 26, 2023 The Hilltop Street Fair – Tacoma’s largest street fair, returns to the Hilltop community on Saturday, August 26 largest street fair, from 11:00am to 7:00pm. In its ninth year, this event celebrates summer with food trucks, beer gardens, vendor booths, live entertainment stages, activities for kids, local community non-profit organizations, and much, much, more. The Hilltop Street Fair centers around the business district along Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Fairgoers can find ice cream, espresso, bakery items, chocolate confections, pubs, ethnic restaurants, and specialty stores open for business.

»June 21, 2023 Fest 4 All – 11am-8pm at Uptown Pavilion. In celebration of Summer Solstice, you’re invited to the third annual Gig Harbor Make Music Celebration with United by Music North America!
»Starting June 22, 2023 – Summer Solstice Gnome Hunt. Beginning on June 22nd, there will be close to 200 little ceramic gnomes hidden all over our parks! Designed and created by local artist, Megan Schowalter, and painted by the very talented art classes at the Key Peninsula Middle School and the community at the Red Barn Youth Center, these gnomes will be hidden in Gateway Park, 360 Trails, Volunteer Park, and Home Park. When you find one, you can keep it! Please limit one per family to make sure that others get a chance to find one. Post a picture to social media with the gnome you find! »August 5, 2023 Mountain Biking 101 – Gateway Park, 10AM-12PM. FREE, but must register. This mountain biking event is geared toward kids who are able to fully ride a bike. Kids will have the opportunity to participate in a skills course and guided trail ride through 360 Trails; guided rides will not include jumps. This guided is designed to help beginners increase their comfort level out on the trails.

»Barnes & Noble – Summer Reading, Participation is a fun and easy way for kids to earn free books. They simply read a designated number of books – library books, books borrowed from friends or books bought at Barnes & Noble – write about their favorite part in our Reading Journal, and bring a completed Reading Journal to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from the books listed on the Reading Journal and collect their free book from a store near them during July and August.
