March 2025 On The Homestead
March has come, and gone. Surprisingly, the month went by fast. It was a busy month with school, chaperoning kids around, and the beginning of spring. I love this time of year – check out our spring bucket list. Check out March 2025 on the homestead below.

CLEAN UP & PROJECTS
March was filled with cleaning up winter’s mess and welcoming spring. Worked on indoor spring cleaning, and lots of outdoor clean up. More hours were spent log splitting.
We’ve burned lots of yard debris, and still have lots to do.
March 1st – first fire and ‘smores of the season!
Been selling 3 dozen eggs a week right now, and hopefully adding more to the farm’s “inventory”. Check out my farm’s Facebook page Tabitha’s Farm.
IN THE GARDEN
Another busy month in the garden; more sunshine, the temperature warming up, lots of rain, everything is waking up.
One thing I love about our property is all the wild plants it’s home to. First of the season I love is the purple dead nettle, stinging nettle, and indian plums.

March is the month I finish pruning all our perennial plants. It’s our third season with grapes, the first I was a complete newbie(I still am) and I didn’t prune at all. We only harvested a little bit of grapes. The second season I did a good pruning, and got a lot of grapes. Pruning grapes is very nerve-wracking, and I just hope I pruned them correctly each year.
I love watching my food forest come to life! Each year I’ve added more plants in it, and have been slowly dealing with the invasive blackberry bushes. My goal is to eventually have it all fenced in, mulched, and be a wildlife sanctuary.
The perennial herbs are all popping up, and I’m not disappointed with all the lemon balm spreading. Fruit trees are starting to bloom.

One of my plans for the garden this year, is to add more flowers. For the pollinators, to add color, and make bouquets.
I use a lot of temporary fencing, and plastic fence post to get plants started and established. We have a lot of animals on the property to contend with. Bunnies, chickens, deer, dogs, ect. It may not be pretty, but it’s needed until I can come up with a better solution.

All our seedlings my daughter and I have started over the past couple months are doing great. We’ve still got a few more plants we’ll start in April, but for the most part we’re done for the season.
animals on the homestead
We’re starting to see more sunshine, so all the animals have been happier. Free-ranging all day.
We had either a young eagle or a very large hawk in the yard, thankfully we were home and the rooster made us aware of it. The wingspan was more than 4 feet, it was huge!

Of course trying to scratch up everything I just planted!
Chickens seem to be out of their winter break, we are getting about 5-7 eggs a day again. I’ve been able to sell 2-3 dozen a week.
in the kitchen
We cooked at home a lot in March; from homemade breads to dairy free clam chowder. We ate our traditional corned beef and cabbage for St. Patty’s Day. We baked a homemade vanilla cake with lemon frosting, and dried flower sprinkles.

Of course we also had many sourdough items; waffles, focaccia are our usuals, and then we’ve been making sourdough discard cinnamon rolls about every other week. So yummy!
life & what i’m loving
While I was browsing the thrift store I happened upon two chicken shirts, so I just had to buy them. I also love the coloring of the pink one(pictured below), and this is the other one I found.
We’ve also went to the local zoo a couple times(a membership really pays off), lots of park time, hiked on Bainbridge Island and saw our first Thomas Dambo troll. My youngest also had her 1st grade school performance – I LOVED that they did a garden theme!
We also did some more library crafts – pictured below was the DIY slime!
One of my favorite things to do during the warmer months is to have a quiet relaxing start in the morning, grab my drink and head outside. The sun rising, birds singing, and just a stillness to the world. I was able to do that on a few mornings in March, and it was wonderful!
My go-to drinks are coffee, Matcha latte, or tea – these bags are great for my homegrown loose leaf tea.
Hope your March was good, and April is going well. I’ll see you in a couple weeks for another monthly recap, in the meantime go enjoy Spring!
