Big Tree Trail in Bremerton
If you’re looking for a whimsical woodland hike with your family in the Kitsap County area, then make sure you save this hike to your list.
Big Tree Trail is a short drive from State Route 3 in Bremerton. There are a few great hikes in the Kitsap County area, but if you’re looking for an easy hike for kids, then Big Tree Trail is the one to do.

Big Tree Trail is a great hike for beginners, families, or anyone looking for a nice run.
We recently did this hike, and the kids had a great time spotting all the fun things on the trail. We saw a face in a tree, fairy house, a “hobbit house” built into the side of the hill, a creek, and of course the 30 foot Douglas Fir. Half-way thru the trail is a nice picnic shelter that would be perfect for a picnic.
The trail would be great to hike year-round, just be sure to bring appropriate gear and hiking shoes because of the steep hills. And you can take two different ways, the road or the trail – but the trail is our favorite and has all the whimsical finds.
I enjoyed spotting all the different plants!

Getting There & Parking
It’s pretty easy getting there, the only difficulty you may have is missing the driveway to the trailhead. Look for the driveway to the Mountaineers outdoor theater, and you’ll want to drive pass the theater to the parking lot. That’s where you’ll find the trailhead.
Do keep in mind when the Kitsap Forest Theater is having a showtime, the parking lot feels up. So, either go on a day they aren’t having a show or go early. Otherwise there is lots of parking spots.
Bathrooms Available
Yes, there are bathrooms available.
Kid-Friendly
Yes, it’s definitely kid-friendly. Your kids will enjoy the trail, and everything on it. It’s a little steep at parts, so do keep that in mind. They also have a wonderful little playground at the parking area, just please be respectful & follow the directions.
No Dogs Allowed
Please keep your furry loved ones at home, they are not allowed on the trail.
Leave no trace
It’s a well-maintained trail, so let’s keep it that way! Take your trash with you. Also, please stay on the path and designated areas.

What to bring on this whimsical woodland hike
Packing list:
- Hiking Shoes – Wear some good hiking shoes or boots, something with good traction. Part of the hike is very steep, especially if you do it during the rainy season you’ll want some good traction.
- Hiking poles would be a great idea for this trail, especially if you’ll need the extra support on the hill and if there’s mud.
- Water – always a great item to bring hiking with you!
- Snacks & Food – especially if you’re hiking with kids, you’ll want to bring snacks. The picnic shelter half way to the big tree would be a perfect spot for a picnic.
- First-Aid Kit – Especially when you hike with kids, having a small first-aid kit with Band-Aids is always a good idea. Also, it’s not a bad idea to have insect repellant just in case.
