Last week we had the opportunity to try the new Family Menu Box, which includes two recipes for four people(2 adults, 2 children). It was quick shipment and came when it was supposed to so I was prepared to get the food in the fridge, but don’t worry if you aren’t able to be home when it is delivered, the boxes should be refrigerated within 8 hours.
All the ingredients were fresh, even when we decided to cook them which was 2 and 3 days after we received the box. Everything was labeled, which is another thing that I loved because we’re not all chefs so there may be an ingredient or two that you just don’t know what it is! One last thing about the packaging that I really liked; when I opened the box it came in the meat was completely separate and all the other ingredients where in a brown bag. Nothing more off putting when I go to the grocery store is when the cashier places the meat in with everything else.
When it came time for preparing and cooking. They send you a recipe booklet with easy instructions, meals take less than 30 minutes, and very easy to clean up. Children are encouraged to help, the booklet even has tips for what steps are easy for kids to do. Something I’ve learned as a parent if your child helps pick, prep and cook food they are more likely to eat it even the vegetables.
You can choose any recipe you like, regardless of your meal choice. Our first meal we cooked was Chinese Five-Spice Pork Stir-Fry with cabbage and red peppers! Mason helped me with this one, it was very easy to prep and cook, it was done in 25 minutes. Very good, lots of flavor, wasn’t spicy for us. And although I wouldn’t say Mason is particularly a picky eater he doesn’t really like foods touching or when there is a lot of veggies, so we put the rice and stir-fry in separate bowls and he loved it even the veggies! (Which was very surprising!)
Our second meal we had Roasted Chicken Breasts with Salsa Verde and Sweet Potato Fries! This one took a little longer than the first one, between 30-40 but Mason was able to help again and it was still easy to cook. We decided to bake the fries and chicken on the grill outside, because it was a very hot day and didn’t want the oven on. There were a lot of ingredients we never use so the boys were a little iffy about the salad, but I absolutely loved all the food and they ate the chicken and fries right up. (My husband is definitely not a veggie lover, so his opinion really doesn’t matter lol)
My whole take away from Sun Basket Meal Kits, two thumbs up. The meals were both very good, lots of flavor, it was nice to try new recipes, very easy to make and clean up. The best part, I didn’t have to go to the grocery store or plan a meal! The meal kits are perfect for those families and/or people who struggle with having the time to grocery shop, meal plan and prep; I know my family often struggles with having dinner on the table by a certain time and also being pregnant it has been so hard going to the grocery store and probably will be until baby is a month or two old.
